Botulinum Toxin Medicines.

Botox® is a brand name for a natural, highly purified protein that is extracted from the bacteria, Clostridium botulinum, under strict laboratory conditions. While Botox® is the most commonly referred to brand, other Botulinum Toxin classes of medicine include the brands Dysport® and Xeomin®.

One of the most common uses of Botox® is in cosmetic treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Botulinum toxins reduce muscle contraction resulting in smoother, less wrinkled skin. All three of the above brands are registered for use in only 2 or 3 areas in the upper face-the frown lines, forehead lines and “crows feet” lines. Doctors are permitted, under section 29 of the Medicines Act, to use Botox in other areas to lift down turned corners of the mouth, to smooth and relax the chin, sharpen the jaw lines, slim the lower face and give definition to the neck.

How does Botox® work?

Botox® / Dysport®/ Xeomin® all work by relaxing muscles that cause wrinkles. They do this by blocking the release of acetylcholine (the muscle contraction chemical) from nerve endings in the treated muscle. A very small dose is injected into specific muscles with a tiny needle. Once the muscles are relaxed, they cannot contract. Existing lines gradually smooth and new lines are prevented from forming.

  • The treatment takes about 10 minutes - excluding consultation time.

  • Results start from 2-3 days, and the full effect is evident at 2 weeks.

  • The effect lasts about 4 months before it naturally wears off.

  • The cost depends on the amount used. I charge per unit used rather than by area so you are only paying for what you actually need. The number of units you require to treat your concern will be discussed during your consultation so you know beforehand exactly how much your treatment will cost. I plan carefully and inject carefully – making every unit count.

Xeomin® is a Prescription Medicine containing 50, 100 units of incobotulinum Type A, purified Botulinum toxin type A complex for injection. It is used for the treatment of frown lines on the forehead, lateral periorbital lines and horizontal forehead lines in adults. It should be administered only by trained medical professionals. Talk to your specialist about the benefits/risks of this procedure in appearance medicine. Xeomin® treatment lasts about four months and further courses of treatment may be necessary. Cautions: people receiving blood thinning medicines, care at the proposed injection sites, pregnancy and lactation. Possible side effects: headache, pain, swelling or infection at injection site, local muscle weakness including drooping eye lids, lack of feeling & nausea. Treatment last for up to 4 months.
