Nasolabial Folds

What causes nasolabial folds?

Nasolabial folds refer to the lines or folds of skin from the lower part of the nose to the corners of the mouth.  As we age, the bone that holds the top teeth and supports the nose and mid face loses volume, cheek skin loses elasticity and firmness and fat in this area becomes more prominent.  Nasolabial folds replace the smooth transition between projected cheek and the upper lip area and contribute to an aged or tired appearance.

Fortunately, several treatment options are available to address nasolabial folds and maintain a more youthful and vibrant aesthetic.

Nasolabial Fold Treatments

Dermal fillers: Dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid can be used to restore volume in the cheek which lifts the fold. Dermal filler can also replace the lost volume at either side of the nose and can be used directly under the fold to lift the depression.  By strategically injecting fillers in these areas, a skilled cosmetic practitioner can smooth out sagging skin and create a more youthful appearance. The results are immediate and can last up to 2 years, depending on the type of filler used.

Thread lifts: Thread lifts involve the insertion of dissolvable sutures with tiny cones or barbs under the skin. These sutures lift and tighten the sagging skin, providing a noticeable improvement in the nasolabial fold / cheek area. In addition to the immediate lift, the threads stimulate collagen production, further enhancing the skin's firmness and elasticity. The effects of a thread lift can last for 1-2 years and further threads can be inserted at any time.

Surgical options: In more severe cases or when minimally invasive treatments have not provided satisfactory results, surgical procedures. These procedures involve the removal of excess skin and tightening of the underlying tissues. A skilled cosmetic practitioner can assess your facial anatomy and provide appropriate recommendations.
