Dermal needling therapy (aka Dermaroller) is a minimally invasive non-surgical procedure that utilises a needling device to create thousands of tiny channels (micro-wounds) in the skin. The tiny wounds trigger a cascade of wound healing activity that results in the generation of healthy new collagen and new capillaries resulting in improved skin texture and reduction of scars. Essentially the old skin is replaced with new healthy skin which is plump, firm and hydrated.
What is it used for?
Dermal needling is used to help stimulate collagen induction and skin rejuvenation, specifically the treatment results in:
- Improvement the appearance of Fine lines and Deep Wrinkles
- Tightening of Loose Sagging Skin
- Reduction in Pore Size
- Improvement in the appearance of;
- Hyper-pigmentation including Melasma
- Pigmentation and Broken Vessels from Sun Damage
- Acne Scaring
- Stretch Marks
How many treatments are necessary?
The number of treatments depends on the indication for treatment and the severity of the underlying skin condition. Generally 3 treatments are recommended for skin rejuvenation. Up to 6 treatments may be needed for treatment of scars and stretch marks.
The treatments are performed at six weekly intervals. (The time it takes for the new collagen to form).
For skin rejuvenation the results become evident at 6 weeks and continue to improve for many months. A top-up treatment every 6 to 12 months is recommended to maintain the results long term.
Is it painful? How long does it take?
The skin is first numbed by the application of anaesthetic cream so the treatment is very well tolerated. For skin rejuvenation, the treatment takes up to an hour. For scar reduction, the treatment time varies depending on the number or scars.
Is it safe? How does it compare with other treatments?
Dermal needling is one of the safest and most effective skin treatment procedures. The treatment causes minimal skin damage and, unlike ablative treatments (laser resurfacing, deep chemical peels, dermabrasion), the skin’s epidermis (outer layer) remains intact.
Dermal needling does not carry the same risk as ablative treatments such as scarring. There is reduced risk of hyperpigmentation therefore safe on dark skin. It is safe in thin, sensitive skin and safe in delicate areas, like under the eyes.
Unlike ablative treatments there is very little “down time”. Many patients go back to work the same day.
Redness and mild swelling may occur immediately after the procedure but settles generally within 12-24 hours. Mild bruising is possible. Dryness and mild skin flaking may occur a few days after the treatment which is a normal response. Bacterial infection is a rare side effect. A flare up of cold sores is possible so a prescription of antiviral medication is offered to those who suffer from this condition.
