Is it safe? How does it compare with other treatments?
Superficial Chemical Peels are very safe because they utilise milder peeling agents (eg. glycolic acid, salicylic acid and Jessner peels) to remove only the outer layer of skin and not penetrate the dermis. The skin is thoroughly cleaned to remove excess oil. Next the peeling agent is applied quickly to the skin with gauze. The skin is watched closely during the procedure and the peel is neutralised at the right point, before it penetrates the dermis.
There is little or no “down time”. Patients may go straight back to work.
The face looks pink initially but fades over 12-24 hours and is easily covered by light mineral makeup. Mild shedding of skin may occur a few days later. Protecting the skin after a peel by a broad spectrum sunblock is essential.
How many treatments are necessary?
The number of treatments depends on the indication for treatment and the severity of the underlying skin condition. Generally 3 treatments are recommended for skin rejuvenation, brightening and improvement in pigmentation. 3-6 or more treatments may be needed for treatment of acne.
